What is Biodynamic Farming?

We asked Weleda gardeners from all around the world to tell us about Biodynamic farming.

What is Biodynamic Farming?

Weleda head gardeners each speak from their international gardens Pierre Kappler, France Biodynamic agriculture considers the farm or the garden as an organism in its own right. Jan Graafland, Netherlands For me, one of the important things about practicing biodynamic horticulture is that you integrate yourself into the annual rhythm. David Millin, New Zealand The biggest results I've seen from our biodynamic farming practices has been healthy land and soil that seems less susceptible to damage from flooding or drought Jorge Giusto, Argentina Biodynamic agriculture has a more holistic, more global vision. Stuart Greenaway, UK Self sufficiency plays a huge part in biodynamics Michael Straub, Germany We primarily use biodynamic compost preparations to prepare the compost and spray preparations to support soil life and plant growth. Moacyr Copani Filho, Brazil The plants grow more healthy, more beautiful and more prolific.

A product is more than the sum of its parts. Our approach aims to benefit both people and planet.

Our garden, nature’s rhythms

Just like trees, we too have cycles. Winter is our time to rest and reflect, while the spring and summer months bring us bursts of new energy.

We can find nature outside us only if we have first learnt to know her within us.

  • Start with dead leaves, grass cuttings and garden trimmings.

  • Add fruit/veg scraps, ground coffee, eggshells and tea bags.

  • Include non-glossy paper like shredded bills or cardboard.

  • Compost will attract minibeasts and in turn, frogs or birds.

  • These eat plant-eating pests like aphids, slugs, and snails.

  • Careful! Don’t put meat, bones, or cheese into your compost.

  • Your compost will give you planet-friendly, tasty crops.
